Dungeon Party

This adventure party has come to a disagreement about the distribution of their treasure! To settle this dispute, they made a bet to see who could reach the next dungeon boss first!  Pick your character and enter the dungeon to settle this once and for all!

One of the projects I got to do at USC was designing a board game as our Final Project for the Fall Semester. My group decided to build a dungeon crawler board game where you and your opponents race through the dungeon in search of your key and reach the final boss.

Characters

Each character has a unique skill that helps players traverse through the dungeon easier. It will also tell where each player's key may be hidden. For instance, the Wizard and Rogue must traverse the map to find their keys while the Hero and Explorer must defeat their correlating enemy to collect their keys.

Map Configuration

After being shuffled, the Map tiles would be configured in a 5 x5 grid ensuring that each game has a different dungeon configuration.
Here are some of the tiles that are possible to find on the map. These range from normal blank tiles, to enemy tiles, to random helpful items, and even the player's keys.
Map Tiles consist of:
  • 1 Start Tile
  • 1 Boss Tile
  • 5 Monster Tiles
  • 5 Shadow Tiles
  • 2 Keys (Wizard and Rogue)
  • 4 Items
  • and 7 Blank Tiles
Hero Deck has:
  • Hero Key
  • and 2 Blank Tiles

Explorer Deck has:
  • Explorer Key
  • and 2 Blank Tiles

The Explorer Deck and the Hero Deck are the Same and each has a 1/3 chance of obtaining their key on the first try.

Design Process

Working with this group of amazing people was super fun but also very challenging. Lots of issues would pop out during production and playtesting. One such issue that would stump us developers was character balance. Each character must hold the same amount of power and the same amount of chance at winning, or else the game is unfair to the other players. We would find that oftentimes the Wizard or the Rogue would win with their faster movement while the Hero and the Explorer were left in the dust. We tried out different methods, added items, nerfing certain character's abilities, but in the end, we settled for separate decks. While the Wizard and the Rogue had to navigate the obstacles of the dungeon to find their key, the Hero and the Explorer could defeat their enemies and obtain their key in a 1 in 3 chance.
