Meet Dr. Magnus Klein

Picture
Dr. Magnus Klein and his friend, Pigment
Magnus Klein never knew his parents and was basically an orphan his whole life. He hated the foster system and ran from there. He had to learn how to survive out in the streets, whether it be pick-pocketing or little crafts to sell. And he managed to survive with whatever he could get.

He was about 10 years old when he was having a hard time getting enough money to buy food for him to eat. Even with all his crafts and small potions he created, it barely bought a loaf of bread. So, he decided to go into the forest that was nearby to find any rare plants or anything that he could potentially sell.
Magnus was searching and searching with nothing on hand when he tripped on a tree root and tumbled down this short cliff and into this ditch that went on for several miles with some tree roots protruding from the sides. He looked up and saw this injured, unconscious person in front of him. Next to the person was a satchel that looked like nothing special, but maybe there could be something of value that he could pawn off. When he knelt down to examine the person, he noticed a few details that seemed off. The individual in front of him had pointy ears, a fair complexion, and looked to be about his age. Not to mention, she did look cute-WHAT! Did he say cute! No no! Must be his imagination!

While observing the strange girl in front of him, Magnus noticed that her foot was at a very awkward angle that should not bend at. Quickly looking around, he noticed two straight and sturdy sticks and rummaged through the bag and found to his surprise, gauze and several herbs he recognized the healers in town would use for their poultices. He looked at the girl with an apologetic look, and then proceeded to straighten out her foot as quickly as possible then rubbing the poultice he made with the herbs he “borrowed” from the girl. Taking the two sticks and the gause, he quickly made a temporary splint for her ankle to heal properly. When he was finished, he got up and decided to leave before the girl woke up, but as he was climbing out, a thought struck his head. If he were to leave this girl alone, one that was still unconscious, she could get hurt more. With a sigh, Magnus slid back down and sat next to the girl and rested her head on his shoulders. After a while, a wave of exhaustion came over him and sleep eventually took him.

When the girl was stirring, she noticed a weight on top of her head and a warmth right next to her. She moved her head, which woke up the boy next to her, causing both to scramble away from each other in embarrassment. The girl introduced herself as Faelynn Sylnorin, an elf child from one of the nearby villages. Magnus offered to take the girl home, which she accepted. With difficulty, Magnus and Faelynn eventually escaped the ditch and proceeded to her village hidden by the deep woods. When the duo arrived, many elves gathered around when one elf in particular moved up front. Faelynn’s eyes lit up at the sight of the elf, for he was her father who was worried sick for her prolonged absence. After checking on his daughter, he finally took notice of the boy standing next to him and introduced himself as the Head Doctor of the region. The elf gave his thanks to Magnus and offered him an apprenticeship when he admired Magnus’s handiwork on his daughter’s injury. Magnus, with nowhere else to go, accepted the apprenticeship and would stay with Faelynn and her father. Over time, Faelynn and Magnus grew closer together and after getting the approval from her father, Magnus proposed to Faelynn. Faelynn accepted and they both got married and moved back to the town where Magnus would become the best doctor in town while Faelynn was the best tracker and hunter. They soon had a daughter who they named Arlynn.
Arlynn was a curious girl, growing up with both magic from her mom and science and medicine from her dad, she had the interest of combining magic with science. With her father’s supervision, Arlynn would conduct experiments combining certain elements and magic charms to create interesting effects. It was one of these experiments that an unfortunate accident happened.

It was one of these mundane days where the day seemed to go by so slowly, almost anxious for something to occur. Magnus had fallen asleep on his desk when he was awoken suddenly from the sound of screams and the rush of heat on his skin. He immediately grabbed the bag that sat on his chair and put on his coat for protection. Rushing out of the room, he dashed to where the cries were originating. There sat Arlynn, terrified and crying out for help.

Magnus dashed to her side and hugged her, trying to calm her down and get a gist of the situation. Arlynn wanted to do more of her experiments and thought she could as her father was close by, but her experiment got out of control and started a big fire. Now understanding what was happening, Magnus explained to Arlynn that they had to leave the room and get out of the house as safely as possible. Luckily Faelynn wasn’t around as she was out hunting, so Magnus did not have to worry about her safety, just his and his daughters. As they were rushing out and almost at the door, he noticed a support beam on fire coming loose and ready to fall on any unsuspecting victims underneath. Before it fell, Magnus pushed Arlynn out the door and away from harm when the blazing beam hit his back and everything went black.

“Protect”

It was quite a while before he woke up again. When he did, he did not recognize where he was, but he knew that it had been a long time since the fire. If he were to get back to his family, he had to find out where he is and how he can head back home.
…
Many years later, he found no success in getting back home. He eventually gave up on his search and decided to become a part of the local apothecary where he works part time as the resident healer and would sometimes sell little trinkets he created from items he found on his prior journeys. He certainly didn’t know that one encounter would change his life.
