Café Esper

Categories: Spiritual Mystery, Rhythm, Hidden Puzzle, Visual Novel, RPG
Setting: New Orleans, Louisiana
Picture
Background:
You get hired at a random cafe owned by a peculiar masked man who is known as the town kook, claiming that he is a medium and can interact with spirits. One night, the owner asks if you can work the night shift. Confused, you agree and there is little to no action that happens. That is, until the old grandfather clock struck 12. At the last gong, you felt a shiver run down your spine. An eerie noise echoes through the empty parlor, when the chime of the bell alerts you of a customer. You look up to find the front door closed and when you turn to the register, an almost opaque lady dressed in Victorian era clothes stands in front of you, ready for you to take her order.

With several more ghostly visitors waiting for their order, you must solve the mystery of their life, or face being haunted by restless spirits. Once you gather enough clues about their past life, you must use your parlor skills to create a beverage or pastry that can fulfill their purpose and help them move on into the afterlife. Time is ticking, so don’t keep Mr Reaper waiting.
Details:
Each Monday at 12 o’clock at night is a new spiritual client that comes in. They explain their name and what they remember to you and your boss. Clients vary in age and time period they were from.

You must work at the register, fulfilling orders, by clicking ingredients in the right order in a certain amount of time. Once finished with a task, you present the order to your customer and they rate it based on time and accuracy, and depending on how well you do, you get money.

After a certain number of orders, your boss comes out from the back and suggests you take a break. That would be the time to talk to customers for any information they may have. From teachers, to museum directors, to even the mayor. All to get info on your client. Certain characters only appear on certain days, so make sure you get the right people when you have the chance.

When the big bell strikes 8 am, then your day shift is over, and you have time to explore certain areas of the town. You can visit people outside the parlor, examine certain places, or even buy trinkets connected to certain spiritual customers from the bizarre antique store.

When the clock strikes 11 at twilight, that is the time to talk to your boss and his occasional shadow minions back in the parlor. You can pay a specific shadow for an exclusive memento you would normally not find in New Orleans.

You enter in the Midnight Hour from 12 to 6 am. During that time period, ghostly customers come in to order. There can be some passive recurring characters that appear, and some of those characters may have basic info you can’t normally get in the realm of the living. If you happen to stumble upon a new customer, you can trade their memento for special information based on your client. And you can tell which memento belongs to them based on the design of the ghost and the memento being very similar.
Game Play:
There will be mostly interviews and dialogue based on characters you interact with. Different people will appear at different times and dates, so be weary of who you contact. There can also be hidden objects scattered around town that you can find that will further help with your client.

Once the midnight hour hits, the parlor becomes spooky, and this is the perfect time to interact with spiritual customers. Be careful of time, because you only have until sunrise to talk to the spirits you wish. There will be options as to what you can say to keep a conversation rolling.

When in the parlor, you will enter a rhythm based mini-game where you must click on the correct order of ingredients in a certain period of time. Based on time and accuracy, the customer will rate your performance. If you don’t do so well, you will still be paid, but not as much as if you did almost perfectly. You can go to the main menu for mini-games if you want to 100% a certain customer.

Shift starts at 12 midnight and goes till 8am
  • Only ghost customers: 12 - 4am
  • Ghosts and Spiritual sensitive customers: 4 - 6am
